Types and characteristics of fiber optical patch cord

Optical fiber jumpers usually refer to optical fibers with connecting ports at both ends, which are mainly used between equipment and equipment to connect lines. The primary consideration when choosing a fiber jumper is how to choose a suitable fiber jumper interface. There are dozens of jumper interface types, but the most widely used ones are SC, LC, ST, FC, MPO/MTP, etc. Different interface types have different application methods and characteristics. When purchasing optical fiber jumpers, you should choose the appropriate one according to the characteristics of different interfaces. (When selecting the type of fiber jumper, please note that the interface of the fiber jumper must be consistent with the signal interface of the devices at both ends. For example, for two devices, the interface of device A is SC, and the interface of device B is SC. If device B is LC, then The two devices must be connected, and the fiber jumper of the SC/LC interface needs to be selected)

LC interface, square, also known as small square port, is fixed with a plug and connected to SFP fiber optic modules. The pin size is 1.25mm, which is half of SC and FC. The volume is small, so it is widely used when installing dense equipment. The interface of LC optical fiber optical line is generally used on 1.6mm/2.0mm and 3.0mm optical cable.

SC interface, square, also known as generous square mouth, adopts plug-in type, can meet 1000 times of plug-in operation, is often used as a connector for connecting GBIC fiber optic modules, no need to rotate, quick and convenient installation, but easy to fall off, unstable, use engineering Plastic material, with the characteristics of high temperature resistance and oxidation resistance. It is most commonly used in routers and switches, and is generally suitable for general networking.

FC interface, round with thread, fixed with turnbuckle. The connection method is cumbersome and takes a long time, but it has a long life and is dust-proof. Mostly used for ODF side distribution frame

ST interface, metal circular bayonet structure, the bayonet is fixed after the plug is inserted into the half circle, commonly used in multi-mode network (such as building or campus network) equipment. (For 10Base-F connection, the connector is usually ST type. Often used in fiber optic patch panels)

MPO/MTP interface, is a push-pull interface, easy to use, MTP is an upgraded version of MPO, multi-core connector. This interface is mainly used to connect high-speed transmission, such as fiber splitter, 40G, 100G, QSFP+ and other optical transceiver equipment internal connection applications, which can achieve high-density connection between network devices.

The ferrule end face of the optical fiber jumper is usually ground into different structures, which are divided into three types: PC, APC and UPC to enhance the effective contact and reduce the loss. APC connectors are usually green and UPC/PC connectors are blue.

PC (physical contact), physical contact. The PC is micro-ball ground and polished, and the end face is flat, so that the contact can reduce the insertion and connection gap. It is the most common interface grinding method.

UPC (Ultra Physical Contact), ultra-physical end face. The technical improvement on the basis of PC is different from PC in that UPC has better end face polishing and surface finish.

APC (Angled Physical Contact), bevel physical contact. The contact end face is ground into an 8° inclined plane, which can effectively reduce the reflection of light, thereby reducing the loss. APC has the lowest return loss among the three grinding methods.
